Excellent bit of kit. Looks great and the sound quality is more than adequate for a home theatre system. It's even acceptable for listening to music. Can't really understand why they still put AM/FM radios in these things though. I'd rather have it without, or with a DAB radio. Having said that, I have plugged my iPhone into this and can use an app to play DAB radio via my wireless network anyway. Note that the official Onkyo iPod dock is not cheap, so I have mine connected via the headphone jack into the unit's aux input.
It has a myriad of settings, some of which I'm still not 100% sure about but the user guide is very good. The simplest option is to connect via HDMI and let the player and the receiver work everything out. The Audessy (sp?) automated sound setup feature is fantastic. Takes 10 minutes or so and is very simple to do. I have it connected via HDMI for 7.1 surround and it gives fantastic sound for movies - I just wish I had a bigger room to get the full potential. I am using it with fairly cheap Eltax speakers and a Gale sub-woofer (all from Richer Sounds), but like I said, the sound is excellent.
The only negative aspect I can think of is that when you select a DTS feature like Neo 6 (did I just say that?) there is a loud click from a relay inside every time the Blu Ray player switches output mode (like when you go from "Top Menu" to actually playing the film). This only happens at the beginning and not through films, so it's a minor inconvenience. I'm really very happy with this product. | | The ONKYO and me: Rating: 5/5 |
I would highly recommend this product. I chose the ONKYO because of advise i got from several forums saying that it was an excellent product and by god it is. I only have it hooked up for 5.1 but it is still great. Very simple to set up. The remote is very nice, better then some of the ones i have seen for Sony and Yamaha.
I love the way you can assign different inputs (digital, hdmi, optical) to your modes (br/dvd,tv/sat). All round this product is great, and im glad a bought it.
