Good in parts: Rating: 3/5
It plays most DVDs and BluRays OK but initially I could not get Avatar or Parnassus to play at all. Trying to start Avatar caused the whole player to freeze. It was impossible to control from the remote and I had to manually power off to reset it. I have model BD-HS22S purchased in Italy and the Italian Sharp site does not even provide firmware downloads. The UK site only offers download of model BD-HP22H. Are HP22S and HP22H the same? Sharp does not want to tell us. I found a web site in Poland that offered a firmware update for a BD-HP22S although the zip file was suffixed with .GB.zip. This seems to have been released only around the end of April 2010. After upgrading the firmware to V1.13 I could at least get Avatar to play but the player takes ages to load and you have to wait a minute or two with a black screen before the main menu appears. Once it was playing... it went for 1hr 25minutes then the sound went, the picture broke up and the machine froze. I had to power off again but after powering on waiting patiently for maybe 3 minutes it offered to resume the film. After choosing 'yes' and hitting 'play' a couple of times it finally got going again.
A second problem is the motor causes the very thin disk-drive cover to vibrate quite loudly. I had to insert a thin piece of paper between the cover and the body of the machine to stop the insufferable noise.
I guess I should expect some glitches for what is not a costly item. Generally it plays everything else OK (so I rate it OK) but I get the feeling that the software and support is letting this machine down badly. Think twice before buying. BD-HP21 seems to have the same problems with Avatar so it is not just this model.
